We all know by now, in rain and not so warm weather, I take to the sewing machine. Winter also means I plan & dream of the upcoming garden & bake my Artisan breads {waiting for the new oven since it broke Xmas day}. So most topics deter in winter onto subjects of my daily winter life.
I have not been over joyed with things I have sewn in the past. Some things could be better {I know, I am my worst critic}but I lack in skill despite the many years of practice. I taught myself how to sew. Plenty of errors and total Duh! moments. Today was one of those moments. I have accomplished a long & intriguing method....
The elastic thread.
Now no laughing from you seasoned sewers. I truly did not know you could sew with elastic by the same exact method as regular thread. I swore there had to be a special needle or foot to use with it.
In my desire to have this whole new wardrobe, my thirst for romantic peasant tops & tunics brought determination. I must learn to sew with elastic thread for the shirring method.
And now...I feel really uber stupid. How freaking easy it is. No special tools or methods. Just wind the elastic thread on bobbin by hand, set length to 3 and.. Zap. I mastered the machine {and feeling rather upset at myself for not doing it sooner}.
I find myself wanting to buy a massive amount of it and sew tons of things! I love this stuff. I keep picturing little Frog in shirred sleeve t shirts, fun Bloomers and tiered skirts! All brought on by the victory of a simple method.
As soon as I get my current peasant top done {made from a beautiful soft cotton curtain- upcycling at it's best!},I will whip up some Spring & summer outfits for Frog.Very much inspired and will cater to the styles of clothing like at Eden's Bouquet {picture from her site of products}. I love her vintage collection but must stay focused on her daily wear.
Thank goodness patterns are on sale for 99 cents. Momma's got some shopping to do!
Sweet dreams,
~Tammie

I didn't know there was elastic thread, but I'm glad you posted about it,in case I need it in the future! I like to do a little sewing, when I make time for it.I am following your blog, hope you follow mine as well, got to go now be back later, blessings Jane
Have fun with your sewing! It looks like you'll have fun with it, even if it doesn't turn out perfect -- which is what you need.
Also, I got the package in the mail with the MEN tshirt and bandana. Thanks!
Elastic thread would scare me too! But if that is what it takes to get those awesome new clothes, I'd be willing to learn it too!
Sewing is on my list of things I will learn. I can do it a little by hand, but I want to learn the faster way. Oh by the way, I recieved all the goodies you sent me. I got them in the mail today! Thank you!!!!! I love it all!!!!!!!
Jane~ I wish sewing was an actual class in schools today as it was long ago. I have always loved sewing but found not many {actually none} of the people I grew up around had sewn. It was looked at as something grandma's did which meant I had very little knowledge to do it. I also accomplished sleeves with this project. Only took 10 years. lol.
Dea Chan~ Sewing gives just another reason to enjoy winter. More projects like this get done since I can not go outside and play. ;) I had to repackage your items since someone moved it to the basement shelf and smashed it with a heavier box. Not naming names. lol. Maybe you will get to attend the next one. It was fantastic and promises to be even better this year.
Apple pie girl~ It's so funny something so simple has kept me from moving on in my skill. But thanks to youtube & other blogs with great tutorials, it finally clicked in my head. A kinda light bulb going on moment. lol.
Small Farm Girl~ Basic machine sewing is not that hard to learn. It's the little things about seams {as in a french seam or binding seam} that can be intimadating, that is until you can see someone do it live. I know I always see at least 1 sewing machine at thrift stores and estate sale places. Of course they are not newer or have fancy stitches & rarely have I seen a serger but to start out, I would go with a simple inexpensive machine just to make sure you stick with it. Youtube is a GREAT resource for beginner sewing how to's. I just watched how to do a Fake French seam so my garments have a cleaner inside finish to them. No one but you will see the inside but it helps give a cleaner finish that will last longer overall compared to one that may fray. I am so happy you like it. I had recieved the special pink thing from a special edition sponsor and knew it had to be for you since it had "your name" on it. The other is from my vintage stash. Everyone should have one of those if you have little girls. Mine love those things and it makes them feel special to have one to put on. ;)
I did not know you could sew with elastic thread either, don't feel bad! Winter is a perfect time to be inside sewing when there is nothing to be done outside in the garden. I myself am just about ready to get started on my first real quilt, very excited!
Speaking of gardening, I received the watermelon and pumpkin seeds today. They look great, thank you so much! :)
