For years I have mentioned the Dandelion Festival in Dover Ohio. This was their 17th year of the Mayfest & Dandelion cook off. Not only were there many dishes in the cook off ,which the audience was able to try after the cook off, but the food vendors on the Winery grounds had their own special dandelion theme foods. From Dandelion petal ice cream to Dandelion greens in lasagna. They were ALL amazing. If you have never tried dandelion greens and would like to know what they taste like, personally, they remind me of a mild, fresh baby spinach leaf.
The wine tasting table had an array of wonderful Breitenbach wines, including their delectable Dandelion white wine. I loved their Dandelion wine so much, I am hoping to travel back down that way for a case. That is of course if there is any left...
So on to the video spotlight. The aim of this special Festival edition is to give a new perspective to those who may not see the worth of Dandelions. And for those who do know the worth of dandelions, maybe this will give you a few ideas on incorporating dandelions into more of your meals.
I wish I could have shot more outdoor footage. It did rain while we were there for just over an hour before the cook off. There were so many people, it made it near impossible to get any footage without every 2 seconds having a body or head block the view. Did not matter where I stood- high or low- not a single bit of that footage was usable. BUT I did include shots of thefood in the cook off (Thank you Breitenbach winery!).

Hey there Frannie! Was thinking of you the other day. Kept wondering about the possibility of getting your way with one of these videos.LOL. I've always got something up my sleeve & found a way to help raise money for a few "foreign" destinations for next year. :) Now if it works and all goes as planned....The Unusual Farm Chick will be invading your place (and a few others) :)! Think you could put up with me for a bit over there? LOL.
Do try the lasagna. The cool part about dandelion greens is you can use it like you would spinach or other greens. And the petals which do not have very much flavor when used in recipes, (like icecream as small amount ingredient). They do how ever, add lovely color for eye appeal. I'll start sharing a few recipes from the book once I do a trial run on them. Chris & Lisa over at the 1 acre homestead will be putting in a raised bed JUST for dandelion growing. I may have to follow suit. Adding a shorter hoop house frame for winter growth.
OMG that would be AWESOME if you came over - greatest blogger hook-up EVER!
We are right in the central Highlands of Scotland (nearest city Inverness) so it's the real Scottish experience - bagpipes, castles , lochs, glens ,Highland cattle, whisky and haggis... and loads of foodie places for you to video!
We have to make it happen!!!!
xx
The plan is to begin raising funds starting the Fall. I found a very helpful which helps people raise funds for projects which actually has been rather succesful for those that get on there. I hope by Fall to have enough experience and credibility to get on the site. A sort of Unusual Farm Chick invades Scotland! LOL. The Captain was in Ireland for almot 1 month just before I met him over 12 years ago. But I have to bring him as my camera guy since Scotland is his next choice to see. I have only been to Canada which I do not count as a "foreign country". I never needed a passport-of course NOW they require one. :) I am all for going over there to do a series of these videos focusing on Scotland. There is so much knowledge and behind the scene kinda places plenty of others would find very interesting & inspiring. It would not be until next year sometime for the trip. I am hoping to continue with this video series and venturing much further out in the U.S by the end of summer. I am hoping to have at least 2 spotlights from every state in the U.S within 2 years. Including Hawaii.
When is the best time of year to visit for a few weeks over there? Ya know what...Can you email me so I have your email. So much to share and ask, it may be best to do it that way.
Speak with ya soon Frannie <3
July/Aug best time as there is loads of Highland games on (men in kilts tossing the caber and throwing things ;) ) Winter is all about the ski-ing/ snowboarding.
Would you take the kids??
I would love to meet Panda in the flesh!

As much as I would LOVE to bring my children there, it would just not be cost effective. Not to mention the lil buggers would make it a bit hard for me to get around as easily as it would with just 2 adults. Who knows. Thats about 1 year away so who knows how my fund raising will work out. I hate the idea of leaving them for 3 weeks, I can barely be gone for more then a few days before the missing them kicks in real bad. I'll write ya an email here in a bit and tell what the plan is.
Thank you so much for sticking up for the dandelion! Personally I think they are beautiful (and delicious!) and they're such a staple around our house :)
I was so excited that I reposted your video on my blog, too. (http://farmhouseblog.wordpress.com)
Many Farmhouse blessing!
Oh Miranda...That is so awesome! Thank you for reposting it. I so badly wanted to get more of the outside festivities & under the market area. They had such wonderful things with dandelions such as soap, jewelry plus so much more. There is always next year!
Hopefully I have open a few minds to dandelions and then they open a few more and so on down the line. :) YOU are now a part of that chain. LOL.
This is great! You did an outstanding job on the video! I didn't realize that I was taking a picture of your daughter after the kids picked their dandelions. I would like to post this on my website. Thank you! Anita
LOL.I honestly thought the woman asking if she could take Panda's picture was just a guest there. We weree stopped alot to be asked about the dandelion crowns. I tried to teach a few moms how to do it real quick but not sure if they succeeded.
I'll be calling you guys soon to reserve some Dandelion wine for our next destination as Hostess gift. :) It will look so nice nestled between my artisan bread in the basket. (not to mention I want another for myself-That wine is superb!!!)
Oh I forgot to say..please do share the video. Your festival was fabulous & after having the Discovery channel there filming too, I am sure the festival popularity will be even bigger next year. ( not that my lil video is comparable to the big guys and gals at Discovery...But I stood next to them for a few minutes in the Barn back, checking out their impressive equipment...does that count? LOL)
