Remember my post about the store bought fresh herbs on March 15th? Panda and I Prepared them and placed each in their own containers. Then were placed in gallon size zippy bags with a small portion left open for air. Some in 2 liter bottles to act as a mini green house..
Well they are ready to be transplanted almost 1 month later! All have taken root! We spent $2 total and received 4 rosemary plants and 6 thyme plants from the fresh herbs. Thats about 20 cents a plant with about 2 cents worth each of the powdered hormone to start the rootings. Add in the soil and we may have spent 30 cents on each herb plant. Now take in mind, if I were to purchase a plant about the same size as my starts, they would cost me anywhere from $3 to $5 each! We spent around $3 for our 10.
Here is the thyme panda started, which is showing the white roots:
And the Rosemary showing roots:
We did not plant all the cuttings in the bag we bought. I did save half for culinary use. Some were woody as you can see from the rosemary rooting in my hand. That was also the one with the most root tendrils. I noticed the top was starting to peek out the top of the 2 liter which spurred me to check for signs of roots. So now they are in their new pots and I am buying more from Beiler's market this week!
Hopefully there is a bit more selection in herbs to add with my need for more Rosemary. I will be giving some as gifts for Mothers day so need to get them going ASAP. Gotta add more pots to the list. Speaking of pots, Lowe's had a nice array on sale that have the tray and pot as one piece. Pretty glazed pots at that.
So now you know, store bought fresh herbs WILL root despite being woody- plus using rooting hormone. Just make sure they are still fresh ...

Totally awesome that you got the plants to root! I will have to try that if I can find some fresh herbs around here!
Good luck on your bees. I would love to have them here but need to say no to that with my allergies.
Hope Chia IS PG ... how wonderful if she is.
I don't know if I've mentioned this to anyone on the web or not, but you are the first that SHOULD know. I'm going to get a lamb (or 2) and at least one goat (Valentino, I hope) ... Norm has gone soft in the head and is out in the barn in this snow and cold and bracing up walls and ceilings and getting ready to roof the east end for my 4-legged animals he swore I would NEVER get!!!
Blessings
That's a great idea for Mother's day- even if I had to buy some herb plants. I'm always at a loss for what to get my MIL- she has a ton of knicknacky sort of things so she doesn't need any more of that. Hmm...Maybe I should head out to Beiler's and get some herbs and try that. I need to buy some rooting hormone and get some lavender going for the new house anyways...
Oh, and I'll be sure and remind you about the spearmint in a few weeks thanks so much!
Bertie
I have often wondered if this would work. I am inspired to give it a shot.
Did you have better luck with the 2liters or the zip-locks?
Connie~ I am so excited for you. I am actually giddy that you are getting them! So sweet of Norm to get it all ready, despite the weathe.LOl.
Birdie~ I went yesterday to beilers and they had a bunch of the roseamry and thyme. Be sure to look at the ends. Some packs have 3 or 4 where others have 6. They were $1.09. Maybe I coud talk you into starting some lavender for me too? Is your lavender out all year long or in a pot? I have never had luck with it in the past from seed and never find it in the nursery.
i am in the hopes the spearamint will start showing more green here soon. That way I can get a few fat runners for you.
Farmchick~ I would say its about the same, but did notice that the thicker rosemary stems had bigger root mass, which happened to be in the green 2 liter. The bigger the cutting, the bigger the roots in our trial run. I now have 11 Rosemary plants and 5 thyme... 3 of the thymes & roseamry go as presents so the rest will be for the garden and to go with a few urban seed kits next Fall. I can't wait to get the roses and start them! It may be a few years before a bloom, but it makes it even more enjoyable to see.
Im going to start drooling..we had a horrid cold snap this weekend I was hoping to get my planters cleaned out and get some of these poor things potted
That is a great idea! I start from seed, but for rosemary, which takes forever to get big (here, anyway), that speeds it up. I bet the boys would like a project like that too!!
Hey great idea. We start our garlic this way, just put a few cloves in the ground and watch them grow. I have many seeds sprouted in our greenhouse that are doing well. just waiting on warm weather.
I have read so many different views on growing from the fresh herbs in the grocery store. i have read use fresh green stems and others say use the woody. So i just went with it and it turned out great! I'm too cheap to buy just 1 herb plant for $3 especially now that i can get a snip a cutting.
Scavenger~The Captain brought 4 bulbs of garlic home from work that almost were thrown out (community fridge at a different terminal then his normal place). He told them his wife would want them to grow.. So he brought them home and this afternoon they are going up in the garden as soon as Frog wakes up from Nap.
