Giving the gift of seed saver gardens & another statue....

I have an abundance of food gardening seed that if not used this year would have gone in the compost pile. Then I had one of those strange dreams. You know the type. They never make sense and you wonder what you ate the night before to set that series off....
I was in our hilltop garden, surrounded by tomato plants. At first all was well. I could feel the sun warming my back (most likely Frog snuggling up or grizzle nuzzled into my neck- hey we are co sleepers after all..). I could hear birds singing and dogs barking-( most likely the yappy neighbors dog at 4 am). Suddenly I noticed my tomatoes had cracks in them and the seeds were spilling out onto the ground. I grabbed a mason jar ( no idea where it came from) and tried to catch as much as I could. I kept thinking of how all that seed was being wasted and how many plants could come from them.
The dream went crazy from there and spiraled into a whole new "trip". But the seed catching stayed with me when I woke up. As I sat on the front porch sipping my first coffee of the morning, I thought of all the seed I already have in my seed saver box. How if I were to plant every single extra seed I had in that box how it could possibly feed 8 families. So instead of letting that seed continue to sit in the box and do nothing, I listed my seed on the local freecycle. I specified what and how many . Voicing I would prefer to spread as much of the seed as possible around, so only ask what you will grow and use.I had a nice variety of seed to offer- all heirloom or open pollinated. Which comes with my strong- "be sure to save seed for next year!"
Instead of a compost pile, these seeds will grow to their full potential, Providing 7 families with real food, created by the care of their hands.
On the subject of creating with ones hands...I made my second statue! I like this one so much better but it is promised to my cousin "Tuesday". She requested one with her legs crossed. So this is what I came up with:
I best be careful... This is becoming addictive. I wonder if they will be o.k not going in a kiln. I guess I could try to locate someone who would share a little space of one firing...
1 week till Chia comes home!! 1 week and 2 days till the chicks arrive! 1 month and 3 weeks till the tree order arrives! 26 days until Spring begins !
Spring dreams,
~Tammie

Your statues are amazing! I finally sent my request to the Akron page. Hope you accept me! Just kidding. I really want some of your seeds. When I am done I am going to the freecycle to find them.
Another idea for a speaker: my friend (a homeschooling mother of 11 with a huge farm in Deerfield)has a daughter that has finished the master gardener program, she maybe will have something to offer?
They grew up raising most of their food. Huge garden and she works for a local greenhouse. Cool?

Hi Beth,
The seeds went quick! If I do have something you would like, I would be happy to share with a fellow homesteading neighbor. we started our tomato seeds on the day of the full moon. I do have some extra- with striped cavern reserved for Gina though. You would be the third member of the akron group.. LOL. I am not sure how to spread the word of the group and hope starting something with the library will bring more members by summer. I think having a specific area group will bring alot of opportunities for everyone involved, as I have stated before. I am waiting on a return call from bakers heirloom seeds to see if they would donate seed to the library so we could hand out a sampling to attendees for a an heirloom veggie and seed starting speaker. Your friend may be useful for that.Is she into heirloom seeds?

you could try to pit fire them:

i made a clay horno for my daughter's american girl doll and we are going to try it when it warms up a bit.

I love that idea! I will have to try that out on a different statue that I would not mind if something happened to it. LOL This may turn into a great new hobby for me...

Hi Lisa, No, I have never touched clay before these statues, nor molded anything besides cookies and breads..No art classes, just massage therapy school which taught me muscle and bone structure. I just zone out and listen to the music. I picture in my head all the muscles of the body & the beautiful curves of a pregnant woman. I could have spent more time on them but my "natives" get restless and I have to walk away from the project as is. I critique the imperfections and kept them in mind for the next one. My arms are not perfect as I wanted and the breasts could have used a little more molding. The bowl is not of perfect shape and smoothness either. But in the end, I still see it as a beautiful pregnant mother. Her face raised to the sunshine warming her body or gazing into the full moon's glow, A proud, sitting straight pose. Wisps of hair laying softly across her chest.

Maybe we could spread the word through homeschooling groups. There is a whole group of people that are like my friend. They homeschool, grow their own food and have animals, pets as well as for food, most of the kids do 4-H and the whole family is involved. I will call her and find out if she is interested.
Talk to you soon,
Beth

If you find a way to fire those treasures, I am sure you could sell them! Look on-line for goddess statues for price! I know I would love one! However, I am a modest person and would prefer one where the hair is covering the breasts - for my own asthetic pleasure. You are awesome, woman!! Get them fired! When they are not fired, they are way too fragile!

Keep up the good work!

PS - how do you pronounce goddess? I have heard it GOD-dess and god-DESS. I have always pronounced it GOD-dess, but like the god-DESS and am trying to teach myself to pronounce it that way.

Actually, I say it like "goh-dess". But I grew up in the south so an accent gets mixed in with the yankee english on occasion. I'm not sure if its the correct way but I have yet to be corrected. lol.
And thank you Connie. It means so much to hear nice comments and know people really mean it. I have always desired to play with clay but never had the chance or knew where to begin. As I get older i find I experiment more with out fear of failure. My next one will be more modest in honor of you, Spinning Grandma. LOL I will experiment with a "Neptune" locks, covering her up.
